According to the editors, G.E. Trease and J.H. Hodson, the inventory of John Hexham is one of the earliest records pertaining to an apothecary’s shop from England. The analysis provided by Trease and Hodson suggests that the inventory contains about twenty-five vegetable drugs, two or three animal drugs, and one chemical, lead oxide. The editors’ text and notes, not reproduced here, identify the drugs listed in the inventory. In the original edition, each item is followed by a numeric citation. These citations have been removed from the edition published here.
