Among the seignorial records of Dienne (Lavigerie, Cantal, Auvergne) is a post-mortem inventory that gives us a rare opportunity to enter a pastoral farm belonging a relatively wealthy peasant, the late Johannes La Vernha, and learn about the contents of his estate. The inventory was created during the course of a guardianship procedure for Guillelmus, Johannes's young son. The inventory proceeded in three stages. On the 3rd of March, 1401, a group of family members and friends, led by Guillelmus Gitberti, convened before the court to request that a guardian be assigned to the young Guillelmus. The judge assigned the guardianship to Guillelmus Gitberti himself. Guillelmus then conveyed an inventory that he had already evidently prepared, and the list of property and goods was entered into the record. Following that, on the 21st of June, Guillelmus returned to the court in order to add some additional items he had found; these were added at the top of the second page of the record. Finally, on the 3rd of August, Guillelmus returned once again to add some fabric and several other items that had previously been missed. Merchants from the nearby small town of Murat acted as experts for identifying the goods and properties, which include buildings, lands, cattle, linens, and some furniture. This is a rare and precious depiction of a livestock-oriented farm situated in the heart of the Cantal mountains, at an elevation of 1100m.
